Securing Sexuality is an educational effort produced and sponsored by The Bound Together Foundation,
a 501(c)3 nonprofit and registered Michigan charity. We live in strange and dangerous times, friends. The culture war is no longer a cold war and for the first time ever, we're seeing a roll-back of civil rights in America. The Securing Sexuality Podcast was launched the week that Roe v. Wade was overturned. This ruling immediately changed the technological paradigm: without an explicitly enumerated right to privacy, the devices that had become ubiquitous parts of our day- and the thousands of apps we carried on them- could all too easily be weaponized against the vulnerable. We're already seeing that happen. A complicating factor is the fraught relationship between technology companies and the world of sexual health. Social media giants censor information about reproductive and gender health, menstrual products, and intimacy under the guise of blocking pornography and other erotic content from their sites. The enforcement of these rules is arbitrary and lacking in nuance- and perpetuates a cycle wherein the silencing of normal, everyday conversations creates a culture that no longer recognizes normal, healthy and safe behavior. We're already seeing that happen. Securing Sexuality seeks to be a disruptive voice, uniting the technologists who are building and protecting everything from menopause apps to bluetooth-connected sex toys with the clinicians who are sharing these tech tools with their clients. We encouraging collaboration and cross-pollination between mental/sexual health providers, technology makers and technology breakers so that safety, security, autonomy, and consent are built in from square one. |
